The person in this position will undertake materials and process research to determine the opportunities of utilizing sustainable/renewable materials and advanced materials in automotive applications. Particular areas of interest are the development of novel process methods for a new generation of multifunctional materials. The individual will need to conduct material compounding studies and resultant injection molding processing trials to determine impact of material modifications on final component performance. This may require development of new or modified laboratory test methods that mimic the environment and loads anticipated in service. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for managing data analysis, report preparation and presentation of project information to customers, suppliers and management. Continuous development of laboratory, data analysis, and basic modeling skills are expected. The candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with Client's material suppliers as well as Manufacturing, Product Development, and Design to improve the quality and performance of polymer material systems on the vehicles.
Polymer characterization using TGA, DSC, DMA, FTIR and XRD. Mechanical and dynamic testing of polymer composites. Hands-on laboratory experience with plastic, elastomer, and/or composite material development. Creation and execution of design of experiments. Ability to prepare written reports and present project to customers, suppliers and management.
Data analysis methods such as multivariable regression and the ability to build predictive models. Knowledge of automated material handling and processing methods.
Experience with conductive fillers to enhance the thermal and electrical performance of polymer composites.. Polymer extrusion, injection molding, and/or compression molding.
Thermoforming and/or over-injection molding. Development of laboratory test methods.
BS in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Material Science
