Position Description:

The person in this position will undertake materials research to develop multi-functional smart composite structures that support next generation interior vehicle design. Particular areas of interest are the design and development of multi-functional materials that may offer enhanced electrical and thermal conductivity with the option of including integrated sensing and electronics. Beyond proof of concept, special attention will be focused on practical implementation of automated material handling and processing methods that enable sensor integration into molded components in a manner that is conducive to high volume manufacturing. The individual will also need to develop new or modified laboratory test methods to validate robustness of material solutions to anticipated loads in service. Other responsibilities will include data analysis, report preparation and presentation of project information to customers, suppliers and management. The candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with client's material suppliers as well as Manufacturing, Product Development, and Design to improve the quality and performance of polymer material systems on the vehicles.

Skills Required:

Formulation and testing of polymer materials. Basic knowledge of electrical circuits and electronics. Development of laboratory test methods. Creation and execution of design of experiments. Ability to prepare written reports and present project to customers, suppliers and management.

Skills Preferred:

Data analysis such as multi-variable regression and the ability to build predictive models. Knowledge of automated material handling and processing methods.

Experience Required:

Experience with printed electronics, conductive inks, and printable substrates. Experience with injection and/or compression molding of polymer materials.

Experience Preferred:

Thermoforming and/or over injection molding. High volume injection and/or compression molding processing.

Education Required:

BS in Chemical, Electrical, Materials or Mechanical Engineering

Education Preferred:

Advanced engineering degree
